K – 6 Spring Waterbug Survey for NSW Public Schools

Students on the Waterbug Survey 2016

Term 3 – Week 8 and Week 9

Available dates:

Week 8 – Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th, Friday 13th September.

Week 9- Wednesday 18th, Thursday 19th, Friday 20th September.

Bournda EEC can assist your students to conduct waterbug surveys at a waterway close to your school. Students collect the waterbugs, identify and count them to assess water quality. Equipment is provided. There is NO cost for this program for NSW public schools.

Bournda EEC staff will be at your school prior to the departure time to meet with staff participating on the day.

Some suggestions for staff are:

  1. Have the students wear gumboots, wet shoes or old shoes at the waterway.
  2. Prior to the day, have students familiarise themselves with common waterbugs – https://thewaterbugapp.com/  and https://www.nswwaterwatch.org.au/resources/waterwatch-manuals are excellent resources.
  3. To make the exercise a valid collection of scientific data, it is important that the correct data sheet is used. Bournda EEC staff will supply this sheet. The survey is conducted at the same location as previously used by your school. If drought or other conditions make this impossible, it is important to choose a new sampling location as close as possible to the original location.

Bookings are now open. Please use the contact form on this page.
