Biodiversity Month
Wild Sumatra – Threatened
Species of Indonesia
Bournda EEC is offering schools the opportunity to participate in a unique incursion!
This program is for Stage 2-3 primary school students and aims to increase students’ knowledge and understanding of threatened species and the challenges of protecting them.
Bournda EEC teacher Luke Brown has made an incredible 20-minute, nature documentary: Wild Sumatra – Threatened Species of Indonesia. Luke has spent extensive time in Indonesia and interviewed rangers who face enormous difficulties protecting the jungle & animals. Listen to the rangers speak with heart about their work to protect the environment. Students can ask questions of Luke and hear his personal account.
Students will compare the climate, culture and native animals of Australia and Sumatra. They will examine the unique species and habitats of Sumatra and learn about the challenges involved in managing threatened species in a developing country.
This project is run in partnership with Taronga Zoo. Schools will learn about how Taronga is helping to protect the wildlife of Sumatra and what they can do to help threatened species both in Australia and in Indonesia. The total length of the session is estimated to be around 45 minutes.
